CV TIPS FOR IRELAND

It is vital that you present yourself well on your CV as this is probably the first contact you will have with a prospective employer and typically less than a half a minute is spent reading it so it must create an impact.

The top ten most common mistakes which are made when submitting a CV are:
1. More than 50% of CVs contain spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.
2. The most recent position should be put first. Candidates often do this in the wrong order and often forget to detail their current job.
3. Do not leave unexplained gaps in employment history between jobs.
4. Make sure you use easy to read fonts and do not mix styles and sizes. Paragraphs and bullet points must align.
5. It is only very rarely that the addition of colour, photographs, logos or use of fancy paper aids your application.
6. Do not list information which is irrelevant to the position you are applying for such as holiday jobs or casual work.
7. Tailor your CV to a vacancy. Employers like to see that you have taken the time and trouble to think about how your skills and abilities match the job you are applying for. The worst possible scenario is if you submit a CV which has clearly been prepared for a different job.
8. Make sure that the CV is easy to follow and that the information is presented in a concise and logical manner.
9. Your CV should be no more than three pages long and long sentences and bulky paragraphs should be avoided.
10. Provide more than basic information. If you prepare your CV in a hurry it shows. Make sure you explain your abilities and achievements in a clear and concise way.
