FACTS ABOUT IRELAND
Ireland, also known as Eire, occupies 85% of the island of Ireland (Europe's third largest island) and is
located west of the United Kingdom in the North Atlantic Ocean. Consisting of 70,280 sq km, of which 68,890
sq km is land, Ireland's sole bordering country is Northern Ireland (UK), adjoined by 360 km of land along its
north eastern border. Its highest peak is that of Carrauntoohil standing at 1,041 metres in height, however,
its topography leans towards an overall level plain with craggy hills and low mountains throughout its interior.
Its temperate weather enjoys the benefits of the Gulf Stream which leads to a warmer climate and results in its
renowned green landscapes. Ireland is home to 4,015,676 people of which 88% are Roman Catholic and 3% Irish
Catholics, the remainder remain unspecified, where Gaelic (Irish) and English are the official languages. One of
the European Union's least densely populated countries, with a density of 55 people per sq km, one in five inhabitants
live in itscapital, Dublin, whilst the remainder are spread across its counties.
Ireland's government is a parliamentary democracy whose chief of state is President Mary McAleese and has been so since 1997. Having previously been a country dependant on their agriculture, Ireland has become a trade dependant economy whose major sector, that of industry, accounts for 46% of its national GDP, $136.9 billion. The GDP per capita is $34,100 and is amongst the highest in Europe.
