POLITICS IN IRELAND
Ireland is a member of the European Union and has a Prime Minister as head of government which has executive power over the multi party system. For some years parliament here has been dominated by the Fianna Fail and Fine Gael parties.
The political system in the Republic of Ireland is a parliamentary democracy. The voting system is Proportional Representation which means that every voter has the opportunity to complete a ballot paper electing their candidates and when the votes are counted a fourth or fifth of the votes cast must nominate a candidate as their first choice. That person is then elected. Ireland is divided into constituencies which follow country or city boundaries, and each one elects between four or five parliamentary candidates.
