POPULATION IN IRELAND
Ireland has a total area of 70.282 sq km. With a population of 4.015.676 it makes a density of 57 persons per sq km very low compared to the rest of Europe.
Over 2.6 million citizens live in the big towns or cities like Dublin, Tullamore, Waterford or Galway. 1.2 million people live in Dublin itself and its surrounding area. 37 % of Ireland's population is under 25 years of age and 21 % is under 14. Only 11.5 % are over the age of 65.
Many Irish citizens left the country but even more entered it. The majority of Irish people are Roman Catholic (88.4 %). The two main ethnic groups are English and Celtic.
Average life expectancies are 75 years for men and 80 years for women. With a death rate of only 7.85 per 1000 people and a birth rate of 14.47 per 1000 people, Ireland's population growth rate was 1.16 % in 2005.
