PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN IRELAND

The train and bus companies in Ireland are Government funded. The services are reliable, but can be infrequent and slow in some areas. Also do not assume that nearby towns will have transport communication links.

Bus Eireann covers the whole Republic, but be sure to check the timetable if you are visiting remote areas as some villages might only be served by a couple of buses each week. The bus service is cheaper than travelling by train. The bus service is undergoing a modernization programme with the fleet recently being completely renewed.

"Atha Cliathe" is a city bus and operates all over the greater Dublin area, and covers parts of Meath, Kildare and Wicklow.

Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ) is the parent company for Bus Éireann, Iarnród Éireann and Dublin Bus. You can access their parent site at CIE Group.

Iarnrod Eireann is the rail company which covers most major cities and towns and is the best way to travel long distances. Train travel can be expensive, but the costs between traveling at peak times and off peak vary considerably so it is worth checking for any speak deals.

In Dublin you will find the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) which operates as far south as County Wicklow to Howth in the north east.

The Irish Government is keen to maximise the use of public transport and have introduced a new high tech rail service, the Enterprise, between Dublin and Belfast. New stations have been built and major improvements are being made throughout the Republic.

The roads in Ireland are not congested but petrol is expensive and some of the minor roads are quite rough. There are a lot of junctions which are unmarked and animals cross the country roads quite frequently, but it is a beautiful country to explore.
