UNEMPLOYMENT IN IRELAND
Ireland was once known for its high inflation, slow growth, high unemployment and huge public debt. It has undergone an economic transformation over the past fifteen years and has moved from an agriculture based country to a leader in hi tech industries with an economic growth of 10%.
Because the economy has been growing so rapidly, the unemployment rate has been steadily decreasing. The biggest problem companies are encountering is finding skilled workers, and employers are searching world wide for the right candidates, while offering excellent training and development schemes to their existing workforces.
In 1991 there were 1,156,000 people employed in Ireland, and today that figure has increased by more than six hundred thousand to 1,820,800. The Irish labour force has expanded by more than half a million over the past twelve years. Over that same period the number of unemployed has reduced from 198,500 to 98,900.
This rapid improvement has made a major and welcome shift in Irish society.
